LU-Card

The LU-Card is the official university card of Leiden University. The card serves as proof of identity within the university as well as for the University Library and for various universtiy facilities. The card however, also offers cultural benefits.

Did you know that your LU-Card also gives you free entry to Wereldmuseum Leiden? Simply show your valid LU-Card at the entrance and you can visit the museum straight away.

Would you prefer to book your ticket online in advance? That’s possible as well. In the online ticket shop, select ‘Museum Card/VriendenLoterij VIP Card/LU-Card/Vereniging Rembrandt/ICOM – Free’ and bring your valid LU-Card with you.

Wereldmuseum Leiden takes you on a journey through cultures from all over the world, with exhibitions on history, identity, traditions and current social issues. Each exhibition offers new insights and surprising stories.

Explore current exhibitions such as K-pop: A Snapshot, exploring the global influence of Korean pop culture or Time for Papua, bringing together contemporary and historical voices from Papua. Sámi Art, Land, Power explores art, identity and the relationship between humans and nature and Yuki Kihara: Darwin in Paradise Camp which examens colonial perceptions, nature, gender and identity. You can also visit permanent exhibitions on topics including Africa, Asia, Oceania and China, and admire the famous Japanese Buddhas. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for the umpteenth time, there’s always something new to discover.

The Wereldmuseum in Leiden is more than a place to view exhibitions. Throughout the year, activities, workshops, talks and events are organised that introduce you to different cultures in an interactive way.

For example, every year you can enjoy the Hanami festival, which celebrates Japanese cherry blossoms. During Matariki, the Māori New Year, stories, music, dance and traditions are shared, and you can discover the rich culture of Aotearoa New Zealand

Are you interested in Māori culture? If so, the Waka Crew might be just the thing for you. This dedicated group of volunteers and enthusiasts supports activities such as those centred around Matariki and helps to keep the traditions surrounding the Māori waka (ceremonial canoe) alive. It’s a great way to meet new people, learn more about the culture and get involved with the museum.
