Azu Nwagbogu is an internationally acclaimed curator. Among other things, he is one of the inaugural co-curators of the Buro Stedelijk, and has curated several major exhibitions across Africa and Europe, including the recent Benin Pavilion for the Venice Biennale 2024. Nwagbogu is the curator of In Brilliant Light: African Contemporary Art, now running at the Wereldmuseum Leiden.

With 32 artists from African and the global African Diaspora, the exhibition looks through time at the development of modern and contemporary art (histories) of Africa, honing in on some of the main concerns of the artists throughout the period from the middle of 20th century today.
In this curatorial conversation, Prof. Kitty Zijlmans, Emeritus Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory/World Art Studies, at Leiden University, will talk with Azu Nwagbogu about the curating of the exhibition, the works of the artists chosen and the major themes. They will explore some of the main drivers that influenced him in the making of in the exhibition, but also what are some of the major factors influencing art making across Africa and the African diaspora today.
