More Mexico

2021 can rightly be said to be a Mexican year: in addition to Leiden, there are major Mexico-related exhibitions being staged in Amstelveen and Assen.

Viva la Frida! – Life and art of Frida Kahlo

From 10 October 2021 through 27 March 2022, the Drents Museum in Assen is presenting the major ‘Viva la Frida! – Life and art of Frida Kahlo’ art exhibition. The exhibition will be showcasing a unique combination of Kahlo’s art along with personal items, as a world first. There is also the collection of paintings, drawings and photographs from the Museo Dolores Olmedo as well as the collection of personal effects (clothing items, jewellery pieces, corsets, photos) from the Museo Frida Kahlo.

Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera, A Love Revolution

This exhibition has now ended

Up to and including 3 October 2021, the Amstelveen Cobra Museum displayed the famed Gelman collection of 20th century Mexican artists, under the header ‘Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera, A Love Revolution’. The work of one of the most famous married artist couples in the history of art.

It is easy to spot the link with the Aztecs exhibition in Leiden: both Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera were inspired by the ancient cultures of modern-day Mexico. Frida and Diego even had a scale replica of an Aztec temple built on the inner courtyard of their home (Casa Azul in Coyoacán, Mexico City, which is now a museum).
