Teruggave Ysletta del sur Pueblo

Historic moment: return to Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (US)

A ceremony to mark the return from the Netherlands of cultural and ceremonial objects to the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo community took place on March 20th 2025 at Wereldmuseum Leiden. This is the first time the Dutch government has returned objects of American cultural heritage to the United States.

In the presence of a delegation of representatives of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Governor E. Michael Silvas of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and Director of Heritage and Arts Christianne Mattijssen signed an agreement on behalf of Eppo Bruins, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, confirming the transfer of these objects from the Netherlands. In the late 19th century, the objects in question (including the community's Winter Drum), of great importance to the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, were mistakenly brought to the Netherlands. In response to a request from the United States and the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, and on the advice of the Dutch Colonial Collections Committee, Minister of Education, Culture and Science Eppo Bruins decided in January 2025 to return seven objects from the Dutch National Art Collection to the community.
