Workshop on Japanese woodblock printing with Shōichi Kitamura

Unique two-day workshop on Japanese woodblock printing

A truly unique opportunity to discover the centuries-old Japanese art of woodblock carving and printing. During this very special and exclusive workshop, the leading master printmaker Shōichi Kitamura will introduce you to the world of Japanese woodblock printing. For the first time, he is bringing his expertise to the Netherlands and sharing his craftsmanship outside Japan.

Mr Kitamura is a much well-known woodblock carver from Kyoto (Japan). Not only does he carve new printing blocks for reissues of historical prints, but he also creates complex woodcuts for international contemporary artists. He has previously given workshops outside Japan, but this is his first visit to the Netherlands.

During the workshop, you will carve a small print from special wooden printing blocks, which you will use to create a multi-colour print the following morning. You will receive your own set of tools, consisting of seven Japanese gouges/chisels and various Japanese brushes. These materials will be used during the workshop and you may take them home with you afterwards.

With the knowledge you’ve gained and the tools you’ve acquired, you can continue practising and refining your technique after the workshop. Experience with woodworking or other printing techniques is an advantage, but not essential.
