May Holiday

May holiday at Wereldmuseum Leiden

Be amazed at Wereldmuseum Leiden this May holiday. Celebrate the Japanese children's day Kodomo no Hi. In Japan, houses are decorated with koi carp windbags. These strong fish symbolize power. Make your own koi carp windbag in the museum or listen to a story told with a kamishibai, a storytelling box.
Experience the new exhibition Time for Papua, full of art, films, and stories about Papua. Join Insos Ireeuw's cooking workshop and make your own Papuan dish: fotfot, made from sweet potato and plantain. Or get creative with tree bark motifs, an centuries-old art form full of stories and patterns.

Workshop: Make your own Koi Nobori wind bag

Parents in Japan decorate their homes with koi carp wind bags for Children's Day. These strong fish symbolize power; they are so strong that they can even swim against the stream! By hanging these fluttering fish flags as visibly as possible, they try to attract the attention of the gods. They can ensure that children become as strong and brave as a koi carp. Get to work in the Atelier and make your own colorful koinobori to decorate your home!

Workshop: TAPA

Get started with a unique art form from Sentani. During the workshop, you will draw motifs on tapa. This is a cloth made from pounded tree bark, a natural material that has been used for centuries as a medium for drawings and stories. It is an important part of traditional culture in Papua. You will work on small sheets of tree bark cloth and be inspired by existing examples with typical shapes and patterns. Step by step, you will learn how these motifs are constructed and what they mean. At the end of the workshop, you can take your own artwork home with you.

Storytelling: the kasuari and other stories

Come and listen to stories from Papua told by Insos Ireeuw. She grew up with stories that were passed down from (grand)parents to children. Papuans do not have books to learn from; all stories are passed on orally. Insos knows many stories, such as the one from the mountains of Papua New Guinea about  ‘The boy who became a cassowary’ or the ancient myth from Biak 'Manarmakeri
and the secret of Koreri' or a story about the bird of paradise, the proud symbol of the Papuans from Papua. Stories that invite you to listen together and discover new perspectives.

Cooking workshop: fotfot

Join the children's cooking workshop and discover how much fun cooking can be. You will make a delicious and healthy snack from sweet potato and cooked plantain: fotfot. This traditional snack comes from the area around Humboldt Bay in Papua. It has been eaten there for generations and is loved for its soft texture and sweet taste. You will learn step by step how to prepare the ingredients and mix them together to create a tasty dish. Then you can finish the dish to your own taste and, of course, enjoy eating it. Bon appetit.
